OPINION: What Are Key Duties of Special Needs Education Officers

My name is Justina Pereira, Special Needs Education Officer Mwingi region.

My main role is to do sensitization on disabilities, assess children and place them in relevant educational institutions.

Medical Referrals

Refer to hospital those requiring medical attention, arrange for rehabilitative services like fitting of prosthesis, hearing aids or reading glasses.

Give guidance on acquisition of assistive devices, helping in interpretation in court, police etc in case a child is deaf and is using sign language.

Donor Support

Solicit for donor support or other well wishers to support the different programs in schools.

Supervise curriculum implementation in special schools and units.

Multi-Disciplinary Teams

Organize for out reach services with a multi displinary team composed of physiotherapists, occupational therapist, culture and social services, children department, orthopaedics and representatives of any supporting organization.
